Room 48 – Secret Chambers, underground rooms of the Bais HaMikdash

Exhibit 48a- The Great Sea. These drawings were made by an artist that accompanied the Warren expedition in 1869-70. This great room is under the middle of Har HaBayis and is called by the Moslems the “Great Sea.” It is believed to have been an underground cistern of the Bais Hamikdash capable of holding several million gallons of water.

Exhibit 48f- Under the Temple Mount. Though this photo was labeled the Great Sea, I believe it may be the quarry known as Tzidkiyahu’s Cave. See Room 5, Exhibit 5j.
